Digging for Charity
21 July 2010
The garden at the Thames Reach rehabilitation centre in Southwark, South London was badly in need of some TLC to enable the residents and visitors to the centre to be able to enjoy the outdoor spaces.
Overgrown and with no proper seating, the garden wasn’t being used to its full potential and the Centre wanted to create a usable space that everyone could enjoy.
So, ten members of PHS Group staff, equipped with spades and pick axes courtesy of Greenleaf, arrived at the centre early in the morning for what promised to be a day of hard work and great fun.
The first job was to clear the flower beds that were already there, and create some borders around the lawn areas. These were then planted with a variety of hardy outdoor plants from PHS Greenleaf, which were watered in and covered with a layer of bark to prevent weed growth and trap in moisture.
Meanwhile, two picnic benches, donated by PHS Datashred, were assembled and placed in the shady areas of the garden.
After a full day’s back breaking work, with half hourly trips into the shade to keep cool in 30 degree heat, the garden was transformed into an oasis of greenery that the residents could enjoy.
