PHS Datashred helps London go Fake Free
17 December 2008
PHS Datashred has helped the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) to launch Fake Free London, its anti-piracy campaign, which aims for London to become ‘fake free’ by 2012’s Olympic Games. One of Datashred’s mobile paper shredding units was used at the launch event held at the Genesis Cinema in Whitechapel.
In the largest ever collaboration against copyright theft and piracy, FACT joined forces with the MPA, Film Council, UK Intellectual Property Office, London Councils, London Trading Standards Association and the Metropolitan Police to launch Fake Free London. The campaign will help organisations in and around the capital to become aware of the dangers associated with copyright theft and educate them on how it happens and what measures will help avoid it.
PHS Datashred treats all data streams as highly confidential, so customers have the reassurance that all waste handled by Datashred will be processed at the highest level of security.
“There is already a general awareness of the importance of recycling in the UK, and therefore many organisations at the very least recycle their paper waste,” explains Anthony Pearlgood, Commercial Director of PHS Datashred, “However, many organisations are still unaware of the risks, should their paper and electronic data disposal process be penetrated. It is important for organisations to understand the serious cost impact this can have if confidential information falls into the wrong hands – in terms of legislative penalties, business losses and damage to reputation.”
Kieron Sharp, Director General of FACT highlights this, “Piracy is often seen as a “victimless” crime but this could not be further from the truth. As an illegal “business” it generates £200m a year for criminals in the UK.
“Evidence also shows that the manufacture, distribution and sale of fake DVDs is controlled by organised crime networks operating in the UK and worldwide. The aim of Fake Free London is to enable and assist enforcement agencies across the capital in tackling the manufacture, distribution and sale of counterfeit DVDs and the organised criminal networks enabling and profiting from this illegal trade.”
PHS Datashred delivers fully integrated environmental services to its customers, handling a variety of waste streams from paper and cardboard through to plastics, and IT equipment under the WEEE directive. Datashred is able to destroy confidential data at the customer’s site in Mobile Shredding vehicles or off site at one of its high security depots. Datashred services are fully compliant with EN 15713:2009 security shredding standard and BS7858 staff-vetting standard.
“By partnering with a Company like ours, organisations can ensure confidential data is disposed of in a responsible and regulatory compliant way. Companies across the UK can help themselves avoid the heavy penalties and recovery costs of copyright and data theft,” explained Anthony Pearlgood.
