PHS Wastemanagement launches innovative waste segregation game

11 December 2009

PHS Wastemanagement, one of the UK’s leading specialist healthcare waste collection and disposal providers, has recently launched its innovative new waste segregation game. This unique training tool has been specifically designed to help healthcare professionals improve their waste handling and waste segregation performance.

As waste becomes an increasingly complex and costly area, the need for all healthcare providers to have a strong waste segregation policy is widely recognised. Experts estimate that up to 70% of healthcare waste is currently being disposed of in the wrong container, which not only has significant financial implications, but could also pose potential hazards to staff and the wider environment.

The new innovative online waste segregation game has been designed as the perfect complement to the personalised training and support material, such as presentations, posters and mousemats, which PHS already offers its customers. This new online tool can be accessed from any internet-enabled computer and provides a simple and fun way of testing your knowledge of waste segregation.

Clare Noble, MD of PHS Wastemanagement welcomed the game and commented, "I’m delighted to have launched this game and am confident that it will become an indispensable tool for our customers. At PHS Wastemanagement we always strive to develop innovative and practical solutions for our customers’ problems and I feel that the waste segregation game is another perfect example of this commitment."

In 2006, the Department of Health issued Guidance to all Trusts regarding waste segregation and the new colour-coding system. However, this Guidance has yet to be adopted by all locations and the task of training staff to recognise the new colour-coding remains a problem for many. In most cases, communicating with front-line staff is often the most difficult element of implementing a waste segregation policy and it’s in this area that PHS Wastemanagement has focused its efforts.

The game has been designed to encourage staff members at all levels, including clinical, administrative and maintenance staff, to test their knowledge in a very easy-to-use and realistic way. With 4 scenarios to choose from; general treatment room, dentist, pharmacy and specialist treatment area, the game offers the opportunity to test you and your staff’s knowledge of a wide range of common waste streams. Using a very simple ‘click-and-drag’ function, players are asked to drop a range of items into the correctly coloured bins. Each item is carefully described and advice is provided if the waste is placed in the wrong container. With links to a more in-depth training section of the PHS website, healthcare staff are able to learn about waste in a very approachable and engaging way.
