"Safe Management of Healthcare Waste" Released by Department of Health

The Department of Health released its "Safe Management of Healthcare Waste" on Friday 1st December. This document replaces the Health Services Advisory Committee’s 1999 guidance document "Safe Disposal of Clinical Waste" and aims to become the authority for all those involved in the production, transportation and disposal of healthcare waste. It offers simple advice to practitioners and will help ensure a unified approach to waste management across the UK.
There are a number of key changes included in the Guidance including:
- The removal of the old "Clinical waste Group A-E" definitions
- Guidance regarding the definition and classification of infectious clinical waste
- A revised colour-coded waste segregation and packaging system
