PHS Waterlogic provides Red Funnel Ferries with a complete drinking water solution

23 June 2010

Totalcare from PHS Waterlogic is helping to deliver savings of up to £9,000 on drinking water procurement for Red Funnel Ferries.

Red Funnel has implemented PHS Waterlogic’s service package, Totalcare, to provide its staff and passengers with a continuous, safe and reliable source of water.

Switching from a bottled water cooler system, Red Funnel is now benefiting from the installation of 22 mains fed water coolers across its office buildings and fleet of ferries. By using a mixture of both WL2000 and WL2500 PHS Waterlogic machines, Red Funnel now has a supply of both cold and hot water readily available. Previously Red Funnel’s drinking water cost the company around £18,500, PHS Waterlogic’s Totalcare service package has delivered savings by halving this cost.

The Totalcare package provides Red Funnel with a full installation and maintenance programme covering the lifetime of its agreement, providing complete peace of mind that if a problem arises, it will be dealt with swiftly and with ease via the customer service centre. For Red Funnel, this point is of extreme importance given the unusual placement of some of its cooler units. The service price covers all call outs, servicing, parts and labour that Red Funnel may require, and a full on site installation process carried out by a fully trained PHS service engineer.

Warren Turvey, Operations Manager at Red Funnel, has found the Totalcare package ideal for the needs of the staff and passengers alike, “The initial decision to switch to a mains fed system was easy to make when we weighed up the projected cost savings. The Totalcare service package is far cheaper than the bottled water system we were using and also frees up space, leaving us with an entire warehouse space free, which can be used for other purposes. In addition, we have the added reassurance that our water supply will never run out, and is maintained by PHS at every step.”

He continued, “When looking at all of the options, we were drawn to the PHS Waterlogic machines because of their UV and BioCote® technology. As our water coolers are also used by the public, we wanted the added reassurance that the risk of cross contamination would be kept to a minimum, and this was the best solution to a potentially dangerous problem.”

Red Funnel, which supplies the main passenger ferry service route between Southampton and the Isle of Wight has nine of the water coolers installed across three of its ferries for the use of Red Funnel staff and the public. The mains fed nature of the machines ensures an endless supply of fresh, filtered water and provides added reassurance that staff will not need to replenish empty bottles. In addition, the machines also benefit from an inbuilt UV purification system, which carries out a three-stage water purification process, guaranteeing pure, safe water within the EU guidelines.

Combining the UV technology with BioCote®, an active surface bacterial control treatment which is incorporated into the outer casing of the machine at the time of production, the machines across the fleet and offices are protected inside and out, against the spread of diseases such as Listeria, Legionella, MRSA, E coli and Salmonella.

As more organisations, such as Red Funnel, push for environmental solutions, PHS Waterlogic provides peace of mind that its systems are helping to make drinking water ‘greener’, by recycling and reusing as much of the technology as possible. Eradicating the need for plastic water bottles combined with the fact that PHS recycles its UV filtration lamps helps PHS meet the WEEE directive, set in place to ensure that companies producing technical components follow the relevant procedure to ensure its safe disposal, with emphasis on recycling as much as possible.
