Facts about Croydon
It has tried to gain city status
Croydon has an estimated population of 381,000 people, strong transport links and a long history, but the debate of why the borough hasn’t achieved city status has raged on for years.
Croydon first applied to become a city in 1954, and then again in 2000, 2002 and most recently 2012.
To get city status is a rare honour and has to be granted by the monarch, who usually makes the decision after taking Government advice.
The Government recently invited towns, through their local councils, to apply for city status to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 – which Croydon applied for but was rejected.
Maybe, just maybe, the borough can officially be granted city status one day in the future, but for now, it remains to be seen.
Dubstep was created here
SGT Pokes from the DMZ dubstep label worked at the Black Sheep Bar before he went on to become famous.
SGT Pokes was the man behind the Sheep’s Croydub nights, where big names in the dubstep community would gather.
Louis Hunt, who worked at the Black Sheep Bar from 2003 when he was 19 until he left in 2013 just before it closed, told the Advertiser in January: “The Sheep was acknowledged as the birthplace of that genre so when dubstep got big we attracted a whole new more trendy crowd.”
King Henry VIII used to live here
He courted Catharine of Aragon when she was living in Croydon following the death of Prince Arthur, her first husband.
However he did not seem to like the town.
He is reported to have called it “rheumatic … where I could never be without sickness”.
He often stayed at a large manor house, known as the Old Palace, and his daughter Queen Mary spent a month recovering from an illness in the house in 1556.
Queen Elizabeth I is reported to have had a permanent bedroom available at the house.
