Facts about Doncaster
1. Flying Scotsman connection
The famous train was built in Doncaster in 1922-3.
2. The Dome
Doncaster's leisure centre is home to the first and only split-level ice rink in the UK. Also did you know that Princess Diana opened the Dome in 1989.
3. Paddington Bear's home
Shirley and Eddie Clarkson designed the stuffed toy in a factory known as the Bear Garden in Doncaster. The first prototype bears were given to their children, Grand Tour presenter and former Top Gear presenter, Jeremy Clarkson and his sister Joanna for Christmas in 1972.
4. 43-year-old goldfish
A goldfish named Tish was won at a funfair in Doncaster in 1956. He died in 1999 aged 43. (This is not the fish pictured)
5. World's oldest horse race
The first horse racing track in Doncaster was established in 1614. The Doncaster Cup was run for the first time in 1766, making it the oldest regulated horse race in the world.
6. Home to the first ever aviation meeting in Britain
Britain's first ever aviation meeting was held at Doncaster Racecourse. At these meetings people gathered to see early aircraft. A replica of the Bleriot monoplane from these 1909 displays can be seen at the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum at Lakeside in Doncaster.
7. Only place to see Polar Bears
Yorkshire Wildlife Park is still the only place to see Polar Bears in England.
