Facts about Northampton
1. Three quarters of the town was destroyed by a spark from an open fire in a house
The famous Great Fire of Northampton of 1675, destroyed the majority of the town but oddly was started by just a small spark.
The spark came from a house with an open fire on St Mary's Street that quickly spread through the streets thanks to a strong westerly wind, narrow roads and thatched, wooden houses.
The Great Fire was described by witnesses as being "more furious and more destructive" than the Great Fire of London which gutted the medieval city of London inside the old Roman city wall.
2. Witches executed after being arrested on the back of a pig
There is a vast history of witchcraft in England and Northampton is no exception.
Five alleged witches, Agnes Browne, Joan Browne, Mary Barber, Arthur Bill and Helen Jenkinson, were accused of crimes such as bewitching a local noblewoman and murdering a child and livestock by sorcery in 1612. Records show the names change but Agnes Browne remains a constant.
Three of the witches were apparently riding on the back of a sow when they were arrested.
The witches were found guilty and hanged - this became known as the Northamptonshire Witch Trials
3. Apricots were used to pay rent
According to stories passed down the generations, residents of Aynho would pay part of their rent to the Lord of the Manor in apricots.
The gardener of King Henry VIII introduced apricots to Britain in 1542, when he bought the trees back from Italy.
Ideal soil conditions saw the fruit thrive in Aynho, a small village near the southernmost border of Northamptonshire, known as the Apricot Village.
