phs Group has been ‘highly commended’ for its LifeCycle process at the annual National Recycling Awards.
phs LifeCycle was shortlisted in the Recycling Excellence Commercial/Industrial category. It was one of only three categories where the decision was so close that the judges awarded the runners up a ‘highly commended’.
LifeCycle provides a solution to one of the most pressing sustainability challenges we face. Hygiene products (nappies, sanitary products and incontinence products) are a necessary part of our lives, but disposing of them via incineration or landfill has become expensive and is environmentally unfriendly.
LifeCycle is the only facility in the UK with the technology and capacity to convert theses absorbent hygiene waste products into refuse derived fuel (RDF), and to do so, on an industrial scale. The RDF is used as a fuel source by business and industry.
The judges commended the new, internationally patented, waste-to-energy process for being the first viable option for diverting millions of hygiene waste products disposed of in public and commercial bins, away from landfill.
Clare Noble, phs Healthcare and Waste Strategy Director said: “We are delighted to have received this recognition for LifeCycle. Everyone involved, especially the LifeCycle team in Smethwick, West Bromwich deserve huge congratulations for their hard work, patience and commitment to making LifeCycle work.
We’ve spent almost a decade refining LifeCycle and now we have an industry-recognised solution for this traditionally, hard to dispose of, waste stream. It’s great to know our success has been acknowledged by our industry’s leading decision makers.”
