The theme of Clean Air Day 2021 is ‘protect our children’s health from air pollution’. This theme raises important questions about how we can make interior and exterior environments safer for our children.
Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of poor air quality – as it can impact their growth and negatively affect their health for the rest of their lives.
Research in the UK found that children are often breathing in fine particle pollution at levels higher than WHO guidelines, putting them at risk of short and long-term health problems.
As well as germs and bacteria, polluted air is often full of allergens. This is a major cause for concern as over 50% of children have some form of allergy.
How can schools and nurseries improve their interior air?

George Perkins Day Nursery is located near Birmingham city centre, and is rated as an ‘outstanding provider’ by Ofsted, As part of their ethos to help children build healthy, happy, and hope-full lives, the Nursery was excited to explore mechanical air purification.
AERAMAX air purifiers are designed to improve indoor air quality and clean the air, removing 99.9% of particulates. This includes harmful germs such as colds, flu and the norovirus. As well as allergens, including pollen, contaminants, and unwanted odours.
After the initial trial, the air inside George Perkins Day Nursery became THREE times cleaner; reducing from 36,000 particulates per litre of air to as little as 11,900. Most importantly, the nursery saw a drop in sickness amongst the children, and a reduction in unpleasant odours.
