The Background
Away Resorts operate several award-winning holiday parks and resorts around the UK. From Pershire to St Ives, these holiday parks offer on-site accommodation options and an extensive range of facilities for guests to enjoy.
As a responsible business, Away Resorts have pledged to do the right thing when it comes to the environment. Initiatives already implemented by the businesses include sourcing sustainably produced toiletry products for guests and no longer stocking plastic straws. As well as an ongoing partnership with Surfers Against Sewage.
As part of a tender process, Away Resorts were looking for services to improve the hygiene and efficiency of their customer washroom facilities
The Solution
To help Away Resorts reduce their water usage, the FLOWSAVER Urinal system and the ECOSHIELD was chosen as the most suitable solution. As well as helping to save money, this solution aligns with the sustainability goals of Away Resorts.
The FLOWSAVER URINAL is an intelligent flush control system that uses an infra-red sensor to detect movement from people using urinals, only flushing the right amount of water for the footfall. It works in partnership with the ECOSHIELD to minimise water usage and improve hygiene levels.
The ECOSHIELD works to remove blockages and keeps urinal traps and pipe work clear, enhancing the washroom appearance and improving its environment for staff, visitors, and customers. Every installation of these devices is customised to ensure that hygiene is not compromised in your washroom, but maximum water savings are made. With all devices installed and maintained by phs technicians.
The Trial Results
Initial metre trials of the FLOWSAVER devices were undertaken with Away Resorts at St Ives, following extensive surveys across all UK holiday parks.
The FLOWSAVER URINAL and ECOSHIELD installed on just one cistern at a location in St Ives estimates a staggering 269,643 litre saving per annum.
Following this successful trial, the FLOWSAVER URINAL and ECOSHIELD have now been implemented in the washrooms of several Away Resorts sites across UK.
phs are providing us with water control services that will heavily reduce the amount of water we use at our Away Resorts sites across the UK. This will allow us to make our holiday offering as sustainable as possible for our guests, aligning perfectly with our sustainable business goals.
Lifecycle For Sanitary & Nappy Waste
To complement these water management systems, Away Resorts also decided to work with phs to ensure sustainable disposal of their sanitary and nappy waste.
Instead of landfill, phs aims to send the majority of customer hygiene waste to Energy from Waste facilities, where it is turned into sustainable energy for the national grid. This is known as the phs LifeCycle strategy.
Going forward, 92.96% of Nappy and Sanitary Waste collected from Away Resorts sites by phs, will be turned into renewable energy.
That’s the equivalent of 18 average size cars of waste that would have taken over 300 years to decompose in landfill.
