The background
Air purifiers are designed to physically clean the air around you, creating a healthier and cleaner environment. We wanted to put this to the test. After a nationwide competition, the following participants were chosen to help us trial air purifiers and assess their impact on children’s nurseries:
- George Perkins Day Nursery in Balsall Heath, Birmingham
- Little Sparrows Day Nursery in Waltham Cross, London
- The nursery class at St Hilda’s C of E Primary School in Stretford, Manchester
- The nursery class at Hugh Myddleton Primary School in Clerkenwell, London
The challenge
The danger of indoor air pollution is growing. The Mayor of London reports young, vulnerable children face a daily threat to their health from the toxic air they breathe each day. The fact is, air is five times more polluted indoors than it is outdoors and UK children are breathing in fine particle pollution at levels higher than WHO guidelines, putting them at risk of lifelong health problems.
What’s more, busy nurseries and classrooms are prime locations for the spread of germs. We wanted to explore whether air purifiers could make a difference.
The solution
Two state-of-the-art AERAMAX PROFESSIONAL air purifiers were installed within each nursery and nursery classroom as part of the trial. Physically cleaning the air from impurities, the AERAMAX air purifiers remove as much as 99.9% of particulates including harmful germs such as colds, flu and the norovirus, allergens such as pollen, contaminants and odours.
The impact
Air quality was significantly improved with nurseries reporting a drop in child illness, improved attendance, cleaner air and an enhanced environment. In addition, staff have felt health improvements and the difference has even been noticed by parents. The biggest improvements were seen at St Hilda’s and Little Sparrows which saw their air become SEVEN times cleaner!
At Little Sparrows, air quality tests found particulate levels were as high as 80,800 per litre of air prior to installation and as low as 10,600 afterwards.
The air purifiers have been extremely effective and we have noticed a difference in the number of children we have had off ill. We normally have large numbers of children off poorly during our settling-in periods but this has dramatically decreased this year. The classroom has a much fresher feeling, the musty smell has gone and the environment feels much cleaner. Staff have felt much better in the environment, we have seen a reduction in headaches and just generally feeling well in ourselves. Even parents have commented that the nursery environment feels nicer this year.
